Freeman City Administrator Dennis Nelsen has submitted his resignation to Mayor Sam Sorensen and the Freeman City Council.

Nelsen, who became Freeman’s first city administrator five years ago, told the Courier Tuesday, he has accepted the position of city administrator in Elk Point and had informed city officials and city staff of his plans Monday.

Nelsen said the opportunity in Elk Point “is a good career move for me and a chance to build on the skills I’ve learned here.”

He will remain at Freeman City Hall through mid June and will assist in the transition process.

Nelsen had spent the past 22 years as a medical staff administrator at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa before coming to Freeman in July 2008.

The Freeman City Council had established the position in early 2008. Nelsen was among 12 candidates considered for the position. The restructuring five years ago included having the city administrator assume responsibility for both city government and economic development. In addition to his duties at city hall, Nelsen has also been active in the Freeman Community Development Corporation and wide range of community projects.
