Luverne Langerock, 89 of Marion, S.D. passed away on Sept. 25, 2020 at the Sanford USD Medical Center. A private family service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1 at Calvary Reformed Church in Monroe, S.D. Visitation with no family present will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30 at the church. Due to Covid-19 the family request that guests wear a mask and practice social distancing at both opportunities to celebrate Luverne’s life. Send to PO Box 244, Marion, SD 57043.

Luverne Arthur Langerock was born on Nov. 12, 1930 to Francis and Minnie (Dykstra) Langerock. He started farming right after high school, becoming one of the first in the area to plant soybeans on a large scale.  On March 6, 1951 he was united in marriage to Erma Bousfield. They moved to a farm southwest of Monroe where they lived, raised their three girls, and farmed for the next 43 years, moving into Marion in 1993.

Luverne and Erma were very civic-minded, belonging to both Monroe and Marion community clubs; they jointly received the Eminent Citizen Award of Marion in 1983. Luverne served on the Turner County Fair Board for 35 years, as a Turner County commissioner from 1979 to 2011, and on the state commissioner board for eight years. Some of the projects he was part of included the initiating of ethanol plants in the county, reconstruction of the FreMar Elevator after the explosion and the Turner County Fairgrounds after the tornado.

When not busy with farming and civic duties, Luverne’s hobbies included golfing, bowling, cheering on the Minnesota Twins and Vikings, participating in Senior Games, and singing in various quartettes, choirs and ensembles. He was a lifelong resident of the Marion-Monroe area. Luverne loved Jesus and was a lifelong member of the Calvary Reformed Church, serving in various positions including deacon, elder, Sunday school teacher, and on building committees for the church and parsonage.

Grateful for having shared his life are his three daughters: Diana Langerock, Orlando, Fl., Valarie Beckstrand, Marion, and Susan Schuldt, Sioux Falls, S.D.; four grandchildren: Justin (Lindsey) Beckstrand, Mike (Kelsey) Beckstrand, Jenna (Collin) DeWitt and Jessica (Andy) Powell; and three great-grandchildren: Kinley, Jeb and Beckham.

Luverne was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Erma on Sept. 9, 2018; brother, Orville; and sister-in-law, Beulah.
