PHOTO OF THE DAY: FINISHING FIRST

Freeman Academy senior Titus Roesler crosses the finish line in first place at the Region 3B Cross Country Meet in Platte Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 14. Roesler crossed the 5,000-meter winding course well ahead of the rest of the field, finishing in 17:33.00; Bon Homme’s Nate Hill was second in 18:16.91.

Roesler’s finish helped lead the Freeman Academy/Marion boys to a region team title. The Bearcats finished with 15 teams points thanks to pushes from freshman Tavin Schroeder (third in 18:37.31) and junior Thalen Schroeder (11th in 19:35.41); host school Platte-Geddes finished second in the team standings with 23. The Bearcats, who also include junior Tim Epp and eighth-grader Finley McConniel, will compete as a team at state in Rapid City on Saturday, Oct. 24.

Other local runners advancing to state are as follows:

Freeman Academy sophomore Jada Koerner (third in the region, 21:07.03)

Menno freshman Ashton Massey (11th, 22:08.28)

Menno senior Morgan Edelman (13th, 22:19.09).

Other runners competing at the Region 3B Meet were:

From Freeman Academy/Marion: freshman Sonora Myers (22nd, 23:44.84), senior Kristen Wieman (35th, 26:44.81) and freshman Hadley Luke (37th, 27:03.59)

 From Freeman Public: freshman Rylie Gossen (27th, 24:25.06) and eighth-grader Peyton McCune (28th, 24:26.15)

From Menno: freshman Julius Carr (21st, 20:13.56), freshman Isaac Fergen (30th, 21:18.56), Erick Buechler (35th, 21:40.06) and seventh-grader Izayah Ulmer (50th, 23:18.47).
