Harvey Wall: 1933-2021

Harvey Wall

Harvey Daniel Wall, 87, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2021 at Oakview Terrace in Freeman, S.D. following a lengthy illness. He was born in Freeman on June 20, 1933 to Albert and Dorothea (Stern) Wall. He grew up in Freeman and served two years in the Army before returning to the family farm and to continue his higher education.

He had a busy, fulfilling life tending to his farmland, opening two successful insurance offices in Mitchell, S.D. and South Sioux City, Neb., teaching real estate courses, and in 1976, marrying the love of his life, Dona. He had their forever home built into a hill on their property overlooking Wolf Creek, where for the next 45 years, they would host a myriad of birthdays, holidays and special occasions for his stepchildren, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed traveling, his cat “Goofy,” a good meal, watching wildlife from his deck as they wandered through his yard on any given day, and a “bump” (cocktail) with a friend who would stop by the house to visit.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Dona; stepchildren: Lynn Hinckley, Lisa Hinckley and Mark Hinckley; his sister, Doreen Tellinghuisen; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; seven nieces and nephews and many friends from all of the Hutterite colonies he considered extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Iona Tecklenberg; his nephew, Todd Tecklenberg; and his stepdaughter, Terri Kowall.

A celebration of Harvey’s life will be held at a later time this spring.

Please direct memorials in remembrance of Harvey to the Sioux Falls Humane Society or St. Judes Research Hospital.
