WOLVES ESCAPE WITH WIN; FLYERS NEARLY UPSET TOP SEED

A young, upset-minded Centerville squad gave the Menno girls all they could handle, but the Wolves survived the scare and hung on for a 46-42 win the second round of the Region 5B Tournament in Menno Tuesday night, Feb. 23.

Centerville (10-12) was the No. 7 seed and Menno (14-6)  is No. 2; the Wolves move on to the third round on Thursday and will play No. 3 Scotland (16-5) in Irene at 7:30 p.m. for a spot in next week’s SoDak 16. The Highlanders narrowly defeated No. 6 Alcester-Hudson 59-52 on Tuesday.

Centerville finishes the season 10-12.

No. 8 Freeman Public, meanwhile, put a scare into top-seed Viborg-Hurley in Hurley Tuesday night, leading 32-31 late in the third, trailing 39-37 with less than six minutes to play before running out of gas and losing 45-39. The Flyers finish the season 5-15; the Cougars will take a 16-4 record into the third round of the Region 5B Tournament on Thursday.
