TIME RUNS OUT ON WOLVES’ SEASON

The Menno girls gave Herried/Selby Area everything they had but fell just short in what was a thrilling back-and-forth game, losing to the Wolverines 49-47 in Thursday’s SoDak 16 at James Valley Christian.

Menno, the No. 11 seed, fell behind early to the No. 6 seed and trailed 14-3 midway through the first quarter, but bounced back over the course of the next 12 minutes. The Wolves trimmed the Wolverines’ lead to 20-12 after the first quarter and to 26-20 at the half, but Herried/Selby Area extended its lead to 38-29 after the third period and to 40-29 with 6:15 left in the game.

That’s when Menno rallied.

Two Paityn Huber free throws, a shot inside by Ashton Massey and points from senior leaders Morgan Edelman and Jesse Munkvold helped pull the Wolves to within one at 42-41, and an Edelman shot inside with 1:40 gave her team a 45-44 lead — its first of the game.

But the Wolverines answered and made a pair of free throws late that sealed the win, advancing to the State ‘B’ Basketball Tournament in Huron next week with a 20-3 record.

Menno finishes the season 15-7.
