Marlene Geidel: 1933-2021

Marlene Joyce (Krumm) Geidel passed away on Sept. 19 at Oakview Terrace. A funeral service will be held on Friday, Sept. 24 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Freeman.

Marlene was born Nov. 27, 1933 to J. George and Sophia (Gardner) Krumm in Aurora County, S.D., where she lived until her family moved to Woonsocket, S.D. in 1937. She attended Woonsocket Public School until her junior year of high school.

In 1950 the family relocated to Mt Vernon, S.D., where she graduated Salutatorian her senior year. In the fall of 1951 she entered Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Mitchell, S.D. and graduated with a RN degree in 1954. After graduation she worked under the Dept of Interior as a nurse with Wagner Indian Services until her marriage on July 24, 1955 to Norbert Geidel at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Dimock, S.D.

After her marriage she resided in Mitchell with Norby, where she worked as a nurse with Drs. Skogmo, Gillis and Brogdon until the close of their practice. At that time she went to work at the Methodist Hospital until she and her husband moved to Rapid City, S.D. in 1980. There she resumed clinical nursing at the Rapid City Medical Center as a pediatric nurse and later gastroenterology with Drs. Marshall and Gibson until her retirement in 1995.

Following her retirement, she and her husband bought a fifth wheel, traveling to Arizona for the winters and returning to Hart Ranch, Rapid City, during the summers. When it became too difficult to travel, they sold the RV and resided in Rapid City until they relocated to Freeman for a time. They moved back to Mitchell for several years until her health began to fail in 2016. At that time, they moved back to Freeman to be close to family.

Marlene was a lifelong member of Lutheran Church Missouri Synod from baptism until her passing. She each was active in the church, teaching Sunday school at Mt Olive in Woonsocket and Zion Lutheran in Mitchell for a short time. She was a member of LWML, Ladies Aid, Bible study groups at church. She always was a dependable servant for church fellowship hour and meals.

Marlene was loved by many and a friend to everyone.

She is survived by her husband, Norbert; daughters Julie Geidel of Rapid City and Cheri (Brian) Knittel of Freeman; four grandchildren: Curtis (Christina) Schoenfelder of Bellingham, Wash., Joshua Schoenfelder of Bismark, N.D., Ammie (Jon) Michaels of Rapid City and Michael (Lindsey Runyon) Menor of Black Hawk, S.D.; and six great grandchildren: Anneka and Lydia Schoenfelder, Jordan and Alyssa Michaels, Braeden and Braxton Menor.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Delores Jensen, brother-in-law Allen Jensen, brother Donald Krumm, and sister-in-law Mary Krumm.
