Gary “Shorty” Huber, 72, of Sioux Falls, S.D., passed away on Monday, Oct. 4, 2021. Gary Keith Huber, son of Walter and Linda (Heckenlaible) Huber, was born May 23, 1949 in Freeman, S.D. He grew up on the family farm near Menno, S.D. As a child he was nicknamed “Shorty” by his siblings and carried that nickname lifelong. He graduated from Menno High School in 1967, attended South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D. and then returned to work in the Menno area.

Shorty fell in love with his hometown sweetheart, Monica Schempp. They were united in marriage on July 25, 1971 in Menno.

Soon after they were married, Shorty and Monica were off on their first adventure moving to Sioux Falls, where Shorty began work at the Zip Feed Mill. They were blessed with their first child, Kristin. Shorty and Monica were “on the go” throughout their married life and didn’t stay put long! The family moved to western Nebraska where Shorty worked selling livestock feed and eventually working at the Lockwood Corporation. It was there that Shorty and Monica were blessed with two sons, Ryan and Gary Ty. Shorty continued with Lockwood Corporation transferring to Clear Lake, S.D. in 1977. He worked on irrigation systems with his territory covering six states and two Canadian provinces. In 1986, the Huber family moved to Mitchell, where Shorty worked for Golden Sun Feeds as a territory representative. He later started the Howard Feed Store. Shorty sold that business a few years later and began working with Central Farmers Coop. Shorty and Monica moved to Sioux Falls in 2007 where Shorty worked for Sioux Nation until the time of his passing. Shorty loved people and made friends with whom he worked with and the clients he called on over the years.

Shorty was a member of Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. He was passionate about his grandchildren and loved to see them grow and attend their activities. Together, Shorty and Monica enjoyed the outdoors and spent many years camping. He also loved a good fishing trip.

Shorty was grateful for having shared his life with his wife of 50 years, Monica; three children: Kristin Detert and her children, Samuel, Luke, Jack and Elijah, Sioux Falls; Ryan (Anne) Huber and their children, Ethan, Olivia and Sophia, Mitchell; Gary “Ty” (Jill) Huber and their children, Isaiah and Ida, Rochester, Minn.; four siblings: Harley Huber, Clear Lake; Allen “Jack” (Karen) Huber, Menno; Rita (Dwain) Orth, Scotland, S.D.; Ramona (Kenny) Bittner, Menno; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other beloved relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his nephew, Nicholas Huber.
