Howard Baughman: 1948-2021

Howard “Chance” Leroy Baughman, age 73, of Tyndall, S.D., passed away peacefully on Monday, Sept. 27, 2021 at Avera St. Benedict Hospital in Parkston, S.D., surrounded by his family, who loved him.

Howard Leroy Baughman was born April 3, 1948 to Gertrude and Cassius Baughman in Fremont, Ohio. He has lived in Fremont, Mecosta Mich., Freeman, S.D., Olivet, S.D. and Tyndall, S.D.

Howard married Susan Scully May 27, 1994 in Rockford, Mich. Howard had 13 children and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Howard was proceeded in death by his parents, Gertrude and Cassius Baughman; a sister Juanita; a granddaughter, Sonyia Hallock; and several friends.

Howard has worked as a carnival ride operator in his younger years, race car driver, and a truck driver. Howard loved building die cast car models, racing cars, and working on cars. He loved cracking jokes and playing cards.

Howard had great love and compassion for others. He would take them in and under his wings and mentor them. He would give them a safe place to sleep and food and great advice. He loved his pets, Caine, Tank and Spooky.

Some of his favorite sayings were, “keep it clean,” “there’s a lot to think about but nothing to worry about,” and “engage your brain before your mouth.”

His passion was of trucking for over 50 years. His pride was his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His love was his wife, Susan Baughman.

Howard’s last request was to be cremated and have no service but to be surrounded by close family when he passed.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Christopher fund for truck drivers and their family, or to his wife, Susan Baughman at P.O Box 103 Tyndall, SD 57066 to help with the cost of final expenses.
