The third Monday of January is set aside as a day to honor Martin Luther King, Jr., the minister and civil rights advocate who was assassinated at The Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tenn., on April 4, 1968. The federal holiday passed Congress in 1983 and it was observed for the first time on Jan. 20, 1986.
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was established to correspond with his birthday; King, Jr. was born on Jan. 15, 1929.
