Norma Letcher: 1942-2022

Norma Letcher, 79, of Freeman, S.D., passed away on Feb. 5 at Avera McKennen Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 10 at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Emery, S.D. Visitation was scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 9 from 5 to 7 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Walter Funeral Home in Freeman. 

Norma Jean Letcher was born to Bernard and Anna Detterman on Sept. 18, 1942.

Norma grew up in Emery, SD and was baptized at St. Martin’s Catholic Church.

She married Lyle Letcher on June 2, 1959 in Emery. This union was blessed with two sons, Bradley and Keith.

Lyle and Norma moved to Freeman in March of 1965. Over the course of 30 years Norma opened her home to hundreds of children who needed daycare. She loved and cherished those children and kept in touch with so many of them.

She leaves to mourn her passing, son Bradley and wife Gail and their children: Kyle (Jessica) Letcher, Christopher (Jennifer) and Adam (Michelle) Stewart; son Keith and wife Susan and their children: Dustin, Derek, Drew (Angele), Dylan and Kaylie (Nick); 16 grandchildren and one great-grandson; her sisters-in-law, Eileen (Kenny) Radel and Cecilia Determan; and a host of other family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle; her daughter-in-law, Lisa; her parents; her brothers: Cletus, Virgil and Robert; and sisters: Ruth, Maxine and Irene.
