REGION 5B TRACK: FAM BOYS 2ND, MENNO GIRLS 3RD

The Freeman Academy/Marion boys finished second and the Menno girls third at a warm and windy Region 5B Track Meet at Gayville Thursday, May 19.

The Bearcats were the runners-up with 118 points, well behind Viborg-Hurley’s 155.

FAM was once again led by the middle distance and distance runners: Thalen Schroeder, Malachi Myers and Elshadai Mesfin went 1-2-3 in the 800; Tavin Schroeder won both the 1600 and 3200; Finley McConniel was second in the 3200; and the 3200 relay team of Quincy Blue, Myers, Oscar Barrera and Masfin finished first. Thalen Schroeder also won the high jump and Dylan Johansen was second in the discus.

For the Wolves, the girls saw a number of strong finishes to help lift them to 108 team points, behind only Irene-Wakonda’s 133 and Centerville’s 136.5.

Ashton Massey, Bridget Vaith and Kaelie Derby went 1-2-3 in the 100 hurdles; Massey and Vaith finished first and second in the triple jump; and Raygen Diede was a double winner for the Wolves, outthrowing the field in both the shot put and the discus.

The Freeman Public girls and Menno boys both finished fifth in the nine-team meet.

The Flyers were led by Rylee Peters, a seventh grader who won the 300 hurdles in her first time competing in the event; and the Freeman girls sprint medley relay team of Peters, Cami Fransen, Kate Miller and Ashlin Jacobsen finished second.

The Wolves were led by Owen Eitemiller, the champion in the pole vault; and the 4×400 relay team of Brayden Sattler, Kadeyn Ulmer, Bryce Sattler and Eitemiller, which finished second.

For the Freeman Public boys, Justin Wollman turned in the top performance with a second-place finish in the 200 and the 4×100 relay team of Evan Scharberg, Tate Sorensen, Luke Peters and Wollman finished second.

The Freeman Academy/Marion girls ran to first place in two relays: The 4×400 team of Estelle Waltner, Sonora Myers, Emma McConniel and Jada Koerner finished first, as did the sprint medley relay team of Alivea Weber, McConniel, Waltner and Koerner.

Koerner was also second in the 1600.

The top 24 performances in each event will compete at next week’s state meet in Sioux Falls. The South Dakota High School Activities Association had not finalized that list as of Thursday evening.

The top performance lists as it was last updated can be found here.
