JULY 9 MCC SALE TO SUPPORT WORLDWIDE RELIEF

On Saturday, July 9, people from communities scattered across southeastern South Dakota — and beyond — will gather for the 33rd MCC Relief Sale held in South Dakota to support worldwide relief projects.

The daylong sale will be held on the Freeman Academy campus in Freeman. It will feature silent and live auction items, a bake sale, craft booths, fresh garden produce and a variety of food served in the food court: stewed beef, cheese pockets, sauerkraut, tamales, taco salad, fruit salad, spinach/strawberry salad, concessions with sloppy joes and hot dogs, pie, kuchen, and soft ice cream.

This year’s event will also include a “pie guys” competition as part of Saturday afternoon’s live auction. This entertaining and good-natured showcase will feature defending champion Steve Friesen and Brad Anderson, Randall Koehler and Nathan Schrag selling their own homemade pies.

Also, in conjunction with Saturday’s sale, there will be a bike ride/walk on Friday, July 8 beginning at 7 p.m. Riders can choose from two distances — 2 miles and 6 miles — while others may take a leisurely stroll through the Freeman Prairie Arboretum. The meeting point for both the ride and the walk will be the Sterling Hall parking lot.

All proceeds from the weekend activities will go to Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), a global, nonprofit organization that strives to share God’s love and compassion for all through relief, development, and peace projects.

The event, formerly known as Minn-Kota Festival, took a two-year break to regroup and emerged as S.D. MCC Relief Sale in 2014. The relief sales in South Dakota have raised a total of about $2.5 million dollars for MCC’s work around the world.

The SD MCC Relief Sale is an annual fundraising event run by local volunteers to raise funds to benefit the Mennonite Central Committee. MCC, a worldwide ministry of Anabaptist churches, shares God’s love and compassion for all in the name of Christ by responding to basic human needs and working for peace and justice.

For more information about the relief sale, check the website at sdmccreliefsale.weebly.com, or call 605-925-7009 or 605-660-2714.  More information about MCC can be found at mcc.org.
