Ruth Becker: 1923-2022

A funeral service for Ruth Becker, 98, of Sioux Falls, S.D. and formerly of Freeman, S.D., was held on Saturday, June 25 at Ransom Church in Sioux Falls.

Ruth Becker was born on September 13, 1923 to Bernhardt and Kathryn (Tieszen) Ewert near Marion, S.D. She died on June 21, 2022 at Good Samaritan Lutheran Manor in Sioux Falls, having reached the age of 98 years. She graduated from Marion High School and attended Sioux Falls College. She became a teacher at a country school for a year followed by her moving to Chicago.

Upon returning to Marion, she married Herbert Becker on Aug. 28, 1946. To this union there were four children: Betty, Donna, Kathy and Galyn. Most of her married life was spent on a farm near Marion. Later they moved to the Freeman area where she worked for the Salem Mennonite Home for 17 years as a med-aid, which she enjoyed very much.

Quilting and embroidering items for family members was a favorite pasttime, in addition to making blankets for the needy. Ruth also enjoyed reading many books. Baking homemade angel food cake and creamed green beans were her specialty. Her family was delighted every time she made these.

Ruth is survived by her children: Betty Becker, Donna (Ray) Kirchhevel, Kathy (Jim IV) Cooper and Galyn (Katie) Becker, all of Sioux Falls; eight grandchildren: Tonia (David) Honner, Julie (Mac) McGovern, Linda Heerde, Jeremy (Resa) Kirchhevel, Jim V (Autumn) Cooper, Crystal Wilson, Jessica (Jared) Waldner and Andrew (Ashton) Becker; 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by brother-in-law, Dale Ras, and sister-in-laws: Vernelle Ewert, Eva Goosen and Lily Schroeder.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert; parents Bernhardt and Kathryn Ewert; sisters Edith Ewert, Leila Ras; brother Irvin Ewert; in-laws Daniel and Anna Becker; sisters-in-law: Amelia Epp, Emma Schroeder, Bertha Becker and Anna Mae Rudiger; brothers-in-law: Willard Becker, Velmar Rudiger, Lowell Goosen, Carl Schroeder, Lester Schroeder and Robert Epp; and three great-great grandchildren.
