2022-23 SPORTS SEASON, SCHOOL YEAR AROUND THE CORNER

When soccer players report for their first practice at 7 a.m. Monday, Aug. 1, it will signify the start, not just of a new prep sports season, but of a new school year.

Indeed, students, teachers and administration at Freeman Academy, Freeman Public and Menno are mentally preparing to say goodbye to a summer that went fast. Freeman Public and Menno will both begin the 2022-23 term on Wednesday, Aug. 17; whereas Freeman Public has typically held only a half-day of classes the first day back, this year will be a full day. Freeman Academy begins one week later, on Wednesday, Aug. 24.

As for the upcoming fall sports season, here’s what to expect. The Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy football team will begin its inaugural season when players report for practice on Thursday, Aug. 4. The Phoenix are playing in the Class 9AA division and will open their season at Burke Friday, Aug. 19.

This will be the second season for the Jim River Trappers, who will also play in Class 9AA and will open their campaign Aug. 19 against Sioux Valley in Volga.

Both cross-country and volleyball practices will start one week after football begins — on Thursday, Aug. 11 — with competition beginning the final full week of August. Go to freemansd.com for all the schedules.
