Gary Mebius: 1947-2022

Please join the family in celebrating the life of Gary Mebius Friday, Aug. 12 outdoors at Mebius Nursery. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. A reception will follow. Please bring a lawn chair and a favorite memory.

Gary Lynn Mebius, age 75, passed away Saturday, July 9, 2022 at Aurora Brule nursing home in White Lake, S.D. He was born Feb. 12, 1947, to Herb and Ethel (Anderson) Mebius. He graduated from Gann Valley High School in 1965 and Dakota Wesleyan University in 1970. Gary taught and coached in the Mitchell School District for seven years. His love of the outdoors led him to open Mebius Nursery and Garden Center. He truly loved his business and was very proud of every job completed.

Gary’s true passion was hunting and fishing. He fostered many valuable friendships through this passion and never was short on memories or stories about each trip.

He also loved his family deeply, never missing an activity or gathering. Gary loved his trucks, boats, dogs, strawberry-banana smoothies, and being called the “Gann Valley flash.”

Gary is survived by his wife, Ila (Friesen); three children, Nicole (Eric) Palmer and grandchildren Brynn and Bryce; Marc (Michelle) Mebius and grandchildren Hazel and Ruby, and Molly (Kevin) Weis and grandchildren Maryah, Emma, Aspen and Micah; brother Rodney; sister Linda; and sister-in-law Short (Larry) Larson. Gary is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents, in-laws Wilbur and LaVerna Friesen, and many special hunting dogs.
