Marlene Schultz: 1937-2022

Marlene Jean Hofer Schultz was born on Sept. 9, 1937. Her soul left this world on Aug. 23, 2022. She was the daughter of long-time Freeman, S.D. residents Butch and Marianne Hofer. She spent her childhood in Freeman where she dreamed of becoming a nurse.

After graduating as valedictorian of her Freeman Public School Class of 1955, Marlene attended South Dakota State University and fulfilled her childhood dream of becoming a nurse by graduating with a bachelor’s degree in nursing, She and Byron Schultz married in 1958.

Marlene moved to Anoka, Minn., where she began her nursing career which spanned more than 40 years. Over the years, Marlene provided nursing care to countless patients and mentored new nurses in how to provide outstanding care to their patients. Marlene continued her nursing career after she and Byron moved to Bullhead City, Ariz., where she and Byron very much enjoyed the “snow free” climate of the Southwest.

After Byron’s death in 2016, Marlene moved back to Freeman. She enjoyed being close to her daughter Colleen, Colleen’s husband Rick Herman, grandson Jacob Lee, his wife Jennifer, and especially her great-granddaughters Jocelyn and Joelle, all who survive her. She is also survived by three siblings, Cathy Reid of New Paltz, N.Y., Jerry Hofer and wife Loraine of Vancouver, Wash., and Sharry Langdale of Washington, D.C.; several cousins and many nieces and nephews. A private cremation was held for immediate family only.
