PHOENIX SADDLE COWBOYS IN HOMECOMING WIN

Freshman quarterback Riley Tschetter threw for all six of Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy’s touchdowns to lead the Phoenix to a 44-22 homecoming win over Colome Friday afternoon, Sept. 23 in Freeman. The win moved the Phoenix to 4-1 while the Cowboys dropped to 2-3.

The game was closer than the final score appears; it was tied at 8-8 and 16-16 before F/M/FA took a 32-22 lead into the half. The Phoenix extended that lead to 38-22 in the fourth quarter but it remained a two-score game until F/M/FA put it away with its final touchdown of the game late in the fourth quarter.

The Phoenix outgained the Cowboys 333 to 252 yards, with 230 of those coming from the air. Tschetter threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Rocky Ammann, a 48-yard strike to Maddox Kihne, a 38-yard completion to Matt Hagen, a 24-yard pass to Evan Scharberg, and then 36-yard and 5-yard strikes to Kihne in the fourth period to round out the scoring.

Kihne caught eight passes for 140 yards and Dominic Sperling led the ground game with 54 yards. And in addition to his 230 yards passing, Tschetter ran for 31 yards.

Sperling led the defensive effort for the Phoenix with five solo tackles and five assists. Rocky Ammann had four solo tackles and Scharberg and Sawyer Wipf each had three solos and two assists for the Phoenix, who host Gayville-Volin (0-5) in Marion next Friday.
