Duane Engel: 1938-2022

Duane Engel, 84 of Freeman, S.D., passed away Tuesday, Oct. 11, at the Menno-Olivet Care Center in Menno, S.D., with his wife Marilyn by his side.

Duane was born March 9, 1938 to Art and Amelia (Nieman) Engel in Menno. On Oct. 9, 1959 he married Marilyn Pfeiffer at Heilbronn Lutheran Church in rural Freeman. To this union they had one son, Keith.

Duane graduated from eighth grade in Menno in 1953, and after his marriage to Marilyn, moved to Freeman. While in Freeman he worked at AMPI until his retirement at age 65. He was a very avid hunter and fisherman, and always had a good (sometimes truth-stretched) fish story. He always enjoyed helping out at the annual fishing derby held at the Prairie Arboretum in Freeman, as well as heading to coffee to catch up on the daily news.

Duane is survived by his wife Marilyn; son Keith and wife Cheri of Freeman; grandson Aaron and wife Rachel of Freeman; sister Virginia and husband Harold Juhnke of Olivet; and brother Leroy and wife Barb of Kimball, S.D.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Donald and Lester.

As per Duane’s request, no services will be held.
