FLYERS GO OUT THE WAY THEY WENT IN — 8TH

When the Freeman High School girls volleyball team stepped foot on the Class B volleyball court at the Sanford Premier Center late Thursday morning, they did so as the No. 8 seed.

A little more than 48 hours later, early Saturday afternoon, the Flyers walked off the same court in the same arena in the same position — eighth.

Competing in the school’s second-ever State Volleyball Tournament and first in 25 years, Freeman Public came up short in each of its three matches played Nov. 17, 18 and 19. The Flyers lost to defending champion Warner 3-1 in the first round, perennial powerhouse Northwester 3-0 in the consolation round on Friday and then to last year’s Class B runner-up Colman-Egan 3-1 in Saturday’s 7th/8th-place game.

Freeman finishes the 2021-22 season — the final one for team leaders Kate Miller and Erin Uecker — with a 21-12 record.

Watch for much more on the Flyers’ three days in Sioux Falls on Sunday and in the Nov. 24 edition of The Courier.
