Evelyn Hageman: 1931-2023

Evelyn Hageman, 91, of Freeman, S.D., passed away on Jan. 4 at Oakview Terrace in Freeman. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14 at Walter’s Funeral Home in Freeman with burial to follow at Rosehill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12 to 1 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home prior to the service.

Evelyn Hagemann was born on Jan. 22, 1931 to Karl and Ida (Ewert) Schultz on a farm north of Marion, S.D. Evelyn and her brothers, Don, Raymond and Dewayne, grew up on a farm east of Dolton, S.D. near the Vermillion River where they enjoyed fishing and helping with farm chores.

Evelyn attended Grace Bible Institute and enjoyed being a Bible Study teacher for Vacation Bible Schools in the Black Hills. She then attended nursing school at Bethal Deaconist in Kansas where she graduated with an RN degree in 1957.

Nursing was Evelyn’s passion. After graduating, she worked at St. Joe’s Hospital in Omaha, Neb. She worked in a variety of capacities and her career took her to several hospitals and nursing homes and eventually she landed at Freeman Hospital in South Dakota. Evelyn enjoyed working with others and giving care to people who were sick.

During the time Evelyn had been working in Omaha, she visited her home church (Easter, April 1966), the Evangelical Mennonite Brethren Church in Bridgewater. Evelyn’s aunt introduced her to Gail Hagemann who was teaching in Bridgewater. It was love at first sight and they were married on Nov. 25, 1966. Evelyn and Gail made their home in Bridgewater and raised two sons, Edward and Timothy.

Besides having a full life with her nursing career and caring for her
family, Evelyn enjoyed working outside, gardening, listening to Christian music, playing table games, and spending time with friends. She treasured the trips that she and Gail took while her son was in the Air Force. Evelyn loved to see the beauty that God designed for us to enjoy.

Grateful for having shared her life are Evelyn’s sons, Edward Hagemann, wife Linda, and their children Melanie, Madison, and Matthew of Las Vegas, Nev.; and Timothy Hagemann and his wife Sara of Omaha; and her brother Don Schultz of Yankton, S.D.

She is preceded in death by her husband, and sister daughter (1944), and her parents.
