MENNO BOYS, GIRLS WIN OVER RAIDERS

Boys and girls basketball teams from Menno both won in a home doubleheader against Gayville-Volin Tuesday night, Jan. 24. The boys beat the Raiders (4-7) 51-49 to improve to 3-7 while the girls upended G-V (2-9) 55-50 to improve to 3-10.

In the boys contest, the Wolves jumped ahead to a 16-9 lead at the end of the first period, trailed 37-39 going into the final quarter before winning the final frame 14-10. A last-second layup that would have tied it for the Raiders was blocked by Blake Rames. Ajay Herrboldt led the scoring with a game-high 22 points and Hayden McNinch added 12 points and six rebounds. Rames and Kayden Ulmer each had four assists.

In the girls game, the Wolves trailed 25-27 at the half but outscored the Raiders 15-4 in the third quarter to propel them to the win. Layne Schmidt had 15 points and Lexie McNinch added 11 to lead Menno in scoring, and Ashton Massey led the way with eight rebounds and eight assists.
