AVON BOYS EDGE FREEMAN PUBLIC

The Freeman Public boys led by as many as 10 points in the third period but couldn’t hold off Avon as the Pirates clipped the Flyers 38-37 in Freeman Friday night, Jan. 27. The loss dropped the FHS boys to 3-10 while Avon improved to 2-10.

The Flyers got off to a slow start, scoring just three points in the first quarter before winning the second period 17-6 and holding a 20-16 lead at the half. Freeman extended that advantage to double figures in the third quarter before the Pirates regained the momentum and climbed back into the game. Avon took the lead late, and a last-second three-point attempt by Evan Scharberg that would have won the game missed the mark.

Seventh grader David Walter led the team in scoring and rebounding with 11 points and seven boards, and also had a pair of steals. Senior Ethan Balvin had 10 points and three steals while freshman Tate Sorensen had six rebounds, two steals and a block. Freshman Luke Peters also had a blocked shot.

The Freeman boys travel to Alcester-Hudson (3-10) Thursday, Feb. 2.
