Frederick “Fred” Daniel Sarutzki: 1948-2023

Frederick “Fred” Daniel Sarutzki, age 74, died on Feb. 16, 2023 at Avera Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, S.D. A memorial service will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 24 at George Boom Funeral Home & On-Site Crematory in Sioux Falls. Visitation begins at 9 a.m. on Friday before his service.

Frederick Daniel Sarutzki was born on Sept. 30, 1948 in Scotland, S.D. to Karl and Margaret (Finck) Sarutzki. He was raised in Menno, S.D., where he received his education graduating from Menno High School. Following high school, Fred began working as an over-the-road truck driver.  

Fred met his companion in life nearly 50 years ago in Mary Tegels. The couple made their home in Sioux Falls, where Fred switched careers to laying carpet and tile flooring. In addition to carpet instalment, Fred found his passion in sales, becoming a vendor at numerous flea markets, state fairs, farm shows, threshing bees and pow-wows all across the country. A passion he and Mary enjoyed until Fred’s illness last year.  

Fred was a loving companion, brother, uncle and friend who will be deeply missed.  

Grateful for having shared his life are his companion of over 50years, Mary Tegels of Sioux Falls; two sisters, Alice Hill of Sioux Falls and Karen Thorell of Shawnee Mission, Kan.; sister-in-law Kathy Sarutzki of Sioux Falls; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.  

Fred is preceded in death by his father, Karl Sarutzki; his mother and stepfather, Margaret (Finck) and Ewald Heckenlaible; three brothers, Charlie Sarutzki, Floyd Sarutzki and Bobby Sarutzki; two sisters, Darlene (Bob) Polzin and Betty Thompson; and one brother-in-law, Dennis Thorell.
