James Merk: 1957-2022

James Merk, 64, of Freeman, S.D., passed away Monday, April 4, 2022 at the Firesteel Nursing Home in Mitchell, S.D. A remembrance of life service will be held on Saturday, May 27 at 2 p.m. at Walter Funeral Home in Freeman.

James (Jim) Robert Merk was born Aug. 12, 1957 to Clifford and Ardis (Pankratz) Merk in Freeman.

Jim attended Diamond Valley District 56 and Freeman High School. He graduated in 1975.

Jim lived and farmed on the family land until ill health necessitated his move to Firesteel Healthcare Community in Mitchell.

His interests were collecting sports cards and following the local baseball team. He faithfully attended the Freeman Blacksox home and away games for many years.

Upon confession of faith, Jim was baptized into membership to Salem Mennonite (South) Church where he was a lifelong member.

Jim had a generous heart. He quietly gave financial support to a number of missions. He also volunteered his time for the Mennonite Disaster Service, Schmeckfest and Mennonite MCC canning for relief. Jim was preceded in death by both parents.

Those who remain are his brothers: Dennis and his wife Sondra of Loveland, Colo., Douglas and his wife Toni of Larchwood, Iowa; nieces and nephews: Jessica and her husband Jeff Ward, Jared, Angela and Andrew Merk; as well as two great-nephews, Connor and Tayvin Merk.
