AMATEUR BASEBALL: SOX EVEN MARK AT 6-6

The Freeman amateur baseball team evened up its season record at 6-6 with a 6-2 win over Renner at Renner Sunday night, June 25 behind a complete-game effort from starting pitcher and team manager Jake Weier.

Weier had good control all night long; of the 111 ptiches he threw, 84 went for strikes. The two earned runs he allowed came on eight hits and he struck out nine in the strong outing.

Freeman nabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth on a two-out single by Mace Plucker that scored Bailey Sage from second base and added four more runs in the top of the eighth. Those runs came on a Phil Madsen single and Renner error that scored Micah Swensen from second base, a Jackson Fiegen single that scored Madsen and a Blake Schroedermeier single that plated Plucker and Evan Scharberg to make it a 5-0 game.

The Rangers’ runs came on a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Plucker, Madsen and Schroedermeier each had two hits for the Blacksox, who finished with nine as a team.

Freeman was scheduled to play at Corsica Tuesday night before returning home to Merchants State Bank field for Sunday night’s Independence Day celebration game against Tabor.
