TIGERS TOO TOUGH FOR PHOENIX, SCORE 45-18 WIN

Howard scored on its first two possessions and held a 33-12 lead at halftime en route to a 45-18 win over Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy on homecoming Friday night in Freeman. The win moved the Class 9AA No. 3 Tigers to 4-1 — their only loss is to Canistota — while the Phoenix fell to 3-1.

It was a new-look offense for F/M/FA as sophomore Karter Weber took over for Riley Tschetter at quarterback; Tschetter tore his ACL against Avon on Sept. 1.

Weber completed 23-of-34 passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns — one to Luke Peters and the other to Chris Aasen. Weber also ran for 64 yards, including a 16-yard scamper for the team’s first touchdown in the second quarter.

Rocky Ammann caught eight passes for 71 yards and Dominic Sperling rushed 14 times for 58 yards.

Sawyer Wipf, playing with a broken hand, led the defensive effort with 8 tackles. Tate Sorensen added 6, Sperling had 5, and Jackson Donlan, Ammann and Taylor Goodwin had four apiece.

The Phoenix travel to Colome (1-3) next Friday.
