Jim Weier: 1949-2023

James (Jim) Weier, 74 of Freeman, S.D., died Friday, Sept. 22, 2023 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. A funeral service was scheduled for at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 28 at St. Boniface Catholic Church of rural Freeman. Visitation was scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday evening at Walter’s Funeral Home in Freeman.

James John Weier was born on April 8, 1949 in Freeman to Clement and Delores (Healy) Weier. He attended country school and graduated from Freeman Public High School in 1967. He then attended Southern State College and graduated in 1971, after which he taught for a year in Elk Point. Jim returned to work on his family farm where he would continue farming and living most of his life.

In 1986, Jim married Jan Mehlhaf of Freeman. The couple was blessed with five children: Matthew, Jacqueline, Jacob, Jennifer and Joseph.

Jim is survived by his children: Adam (Jen) Saupe of Denver, Colo. (sons Brody and Ledger); Jacqueline (Joel) Bartling of Gregory, S.D. (children Jessa, Jimmy and Josephine); Jacob (Abby) Weier of Freeman (sons Tucker and Pete); Jennifer Weier of Atlanta, Ga.; and Joseph (Jailyn) Weier of Tea, S.D. Surviving family members also include siblings Larry Weier, Mary Ann Herrboldt, Steve (Bernie) Weier, Allen (Barb) Weier, Sue Boe and William Weier; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death was his wife, Jan; his stillborn son, Matthew; parents, Clement and Delores; parents-in-law, Milton and Jean Mehlhaf; sister-in-law, LouAnn Weier; brothers-in-law, Dennis Herrboldt, Byron Boe, and Mark Mehlhaf; nephew, Chase Weier; and niece Marsha Jaros.
