PHOENIX REACH 50 POINTS AGAIN; MOVE TO 5-1

Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy put up at least 50 points for the fifth time this season, and improved to 5-1 in its second year as a football cooperative, with a 50-6 win at Gayville-Volin Friday night, Sept. 29.

The Raiders dropped to 1-5.

Sophomore quarterback Karter Weber had another outstanding game, rushing for 131 yards and two touchdowns and throwing for another 110 yards and pair of touchdowns. Dominic Sperling carried the ball eight times for 120 yards and three scores while Luke Peters caught a 73-yard touchdown pass.

F/M/FA led 14-0 after the first quarter, 22-0 at the half and 37-6 at the end of three quarters before tacking on two touchdowns in the fourth.

The Phoenix’s defensive effort was led by Sawyer Wipf, who had seven solo tackles and was in on three others and also a quarterback sack that set the Raiders back 10 yards. Christopher Aasen had seven solo tackles and was in on another and Rocky Ammann and Tannen Auch each had four solo tackles. Other defensive linemen who recorded a quarterback sack were Peters (2), Aasen (2), Tate Sorensen (2) and Auch, Dillon Podzimek and Hunter Nankivel.

F/M/FA was penalized once for 10 yards — that’s just two flags thrown on the Phoenix the past two weeks — and had 372 yards of total offense compared to Gayville-Volin’s 160.

The Phoenix host Corsica-Stickney (4-2) for Marion’s homecoming game in Marion next Friday and will finish the regular season at Florence-Henry (0-5) on Oct. 13.
