Michael Schweitzer, 72

Michael James Schweitzer, age 72 of Yankton, S.D., died peacefully on Thursday, Nov. 2, 2023 at his home in Yankton.

Michael was born Dec. 26, 1950 in Yankton to Francis and Adeline Schweitzer of Freeman, S.D. Being the third born out of 14 children Mike graduated from high school in 1970 from Freeman High School. Before he joined the US Air Force, he worked on the family farm milking the cows and helping with all other farming chores. Teaching his younger brothers, he took care of the tough cows and let his other brothers take the easy ones. Not only did he work alongside his brothers, but he also allowed his sisters to influence his life during his high school years.

He held family ties close to his heart. This signified what type of personality he had, easy going, forgiving, and loving. He decided to join the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War and was stationed in Germany throughout his tour in the military. He enjoyed skiing, especially the Swiss Alps while he was there, as well as after his discharge in Colorado.

Working in many types of construction jobs after the military he met the love of his life, Suke. They found great joy together with her children and he enjoyed watching his step-grandchildren in their activities in Colorado. He liked everything outdoors: hiking Pikes Peak, skiing, biking, and fishing under the Colorado skies.

Michael is survived by sister-in-law Mary Schweitzer, Yankton; brother Allen, Yankton; sister Angela (Randy) Schaeffer, Yankton; sister Donna (William) Cap, Tabor S.D.; brother, Bruce (Sandy) Schweitzer, Scotland, S.D.; brother Randy (Lisa) Schweitzer, Centerville S.D.; sister Mary (Doug) Baumiller, Parkston, S.D.; sister Pam Jensen, Yankton; brother Brian (Sherry) Schweitzer, Hyrum Utah; Charlene (Gerry) Hora, Freeman; brother Darrold (Lori) Schweitzer, Watertown S.D.; sister Vicki (Garrett) Pachl, Glenwood Iowa; brother Kevin (Kara) Schweitzer, Sioux Falls S.D.; including all of his numerous nieces and nephews.

Michael was preceded in death by his brother Steven and his parents, Francis and Adeline.
