FLYERS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER IN HURLEY

Three nights after defeating Class A Platte-Geddes 66-55 to open the season, the girls basketball team from Freeman Public took down two-time defending Class B champion Viborg-Hurley in Hurley. The Flyers claimed the 55-47 Friday, Dec. 8 behind 21 points, 10 rebounds and six steals from freshman Rylee Peters and a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) from senior Cami Fransen.

Freeman fell behind in the opening minutes but held a 14-13 lead after one and 20-19 advantage at the half. A strong third quarter put the Flyers up by 12 heading in the final eight minutes, but the Vikings made a run to tie the game with three minutes to play.

But a free throw and field goal underneath from Ella Walter on Freeman’s next two possessions put the Flyers back on top by three; a Peters field goal two possessions later made it a 50-45 game with a minute to play; and Freeman benefited from a technical foul called on Viborg-Hurley for putting a player on the court with five fouls, and that put the game out of reach for the Cougars.

Ashlin Jacobsen had nine points, six rebounds and three steals for Freeman, which travels to Montrose next Tuesday, Dec. 12 to face another Class A team — McCook Central/Montrose.
