FHS BOYS TOP CENTERVILLE; NO. 1 GIRLS TOO MUCH FOR FLYERS

A fast start triggered by the hot hand of junior Chris Aasen, who connected on four three-pointers early, helped give the Freeman Public boys a double-digit lead in the first quarter, and the Flyers held off Centerville late to claim a 71-63 home win Tuesday night, Jan. 16.

The win was Freeman’s third in a row and pushed the boys over the .500 mark at 4-3. The Tornadoes dropped to 4-3.

The Flyers led 42-27 but Centerville won the third period 19-14 and were down by just five points with under 4 minutes to play, but Freeman closed the deal late.

Aasen led all scorers with 18 points, senior Rocky Ammann had 15 points and two blocked shots, and sophomore Tate Sorensen tallied a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Tuesday’s game also featured the return of eighth-grader David Walter, who missed the first part of the season with a foot injury. He scored seven points.

The Flyers host Menno (0-8) Thursday night, Jan. 18.

FHS GIRLS 32, CENTERVILLE 73

The Freeman Public girls trailed just 16-14 after the first period but Class B’s No. 1-ranked team showed just how dangerous they can be by outscoring the Flyers 57-18 the rest of the way in a 73-32 rout. Freeman dropped to 6-2 while the Tornadoes improved to 9-0.

Freshman Rylee Peters was the top scorer for the Flyers with nine points and had a pair of assists, and senior Cami Fransen had four rebounds, two assists and two steals for the Flyers, who shot 34% from the field compared to Centerville’s 60%. The Tornadoes also won the rebounding battle 34 to 18.

The Freeman girls visit Menno (0-7) Friday night.
