FLYERS SWEEP WOLVES IN FRIDAY DOUBLEHEADER

Eighth grader David Walter led all scorers with 16 points and the Flyers had three other players in double-figures as Freeman routed Menno 77-33 in Cornbelt Conference basketball action Friday night in Menno. The win was the Flyers’ fourth in a row and moved them to 5-3 on the season while the Wolves dropped to 0-9.

Also for Freeman, sophomore Luke Peters scored 13 points and sophomore Tate Sorensen and senior Rocky Ammann each had 12. Sorensen added eight rebounds, four steals and a blocked shot and Peters had seven rebounds and five assists.

The Flyers led 29-9 after the first quarter, 53-19 at the half and 73-30 after three quarters.

For Menno, Izayah Ulmer had 15 points and four rebounds, Isaac Fergen had five points and four rebounds and Bryce Sattler had four points, four rebounds and three steals.

Freeman hosts Parker (4-5) on Monday while Menno travels to Gayville-Volin (4-4) on Tuesday.

FHS GIRLS 65, MENNO 25

The Freeman girls bounced back from a tough loss to No. 1 Centerville with a convincing win over Menno as part of Friday night’s doubleheader. The Flyers led 29-14 at the half before outscoring the Wolves 36-11 the rest of the way. The win moved Freeman to 7-2 while Menno dropped to 0-8.

Senior Ashlin Jacobsen led all scorers with 22 points and junior Peyton McCune and sophomore Vaida Ammann both had 14 points. Ammann added three assists and nine steals and freshman Rylee Peters led the team with six rebounds.

For the Wolves, senior Ashton Massey had seven points, 16 rebounds, three assists, three blocked shots and two steals while sophomore Lexie McNinch added six points and five rebounds. Senior Kaelie Derby had five points, four rebounds and a pair of assists and junior Ellyana Ulmer scored four points and had two steals and two blocked shots.

The Freeman and Menno girls both play in the Blizzard Buster Classic hosted by Irene-Wakonda on Saturday; the Wolves face Scotland (1-7) at 9:30 a.m. while the Flyers play White River (7-2) at 6 p.m.
