GOSSEN TO WRESTLE FOR 113 LB. TITLE; TSCHETTER FOR 7TH PLACE

THE LATEST

Freeman High School freshman Brody Gossen will wrestle for 113 lb. state title while Freeman High School eighth grader Easton Tschetter will compete in the 7th/8th-place match in the 120 lb. devision — both on Saturday.

Gossen (47-2) will face Brody Randall (43-0), a sophomore from Hamlin who handed Gossen his only two losses of the season. The championship round is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Tschetter (48-6) will face Miller/Highmore-Harrold sophomore Talon Ping (39-10) Saturday morning. The medal round begins at 10 a.m.

Tschetter’s spot in Saturday’s medal round follows a 5-0 loss to Canton junior Zach Bartels in the third round consolation bracket Friday afternoon while Gossen earned his place in the title match with a 9-0 major decision over Custer junior Tyler Trant.

EARLIER ON FRIDAY

Freeman eighth grader Easton Tschetter is guaranteed a top-eight finish after defeating Webster Area’s Tacey Miller by fall at 1:44. Tschetter, who was leading the senior 6-2 when he pinned him, will wrestle Canton junior Zach Bartels (41-13) as he tries to work his way through the medal bracket later Friday afternoon. Tschetter can finish as high as third.

Eliminated from competition is:

Marion junior Keaton Preheim, who lost a major decision to Winner Area’s Konner Osborn 13-0 at 132 lbs.;

Freeman freshman Logun Pankratz, who fell to Webster Area’s Tayden Kurkowski 8-3 at 106 lbs.;

Marion senior Sarah Cremer, who lost to Brookings sophomore Bailey Tekrony in the 114 lb. division.

QUARTERFINALS

113: Gossen earned his 100th career win with a 1-0 decision over Bennett County eighth grader Maddux Risse and will face Custer junior Tyler Trant (46-6) in Friday afternoon’s semifinal round. A win puts Gossen in the 113 lb. championship.

120: Tschetter lost to Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes senior Kasen Konstanz by fall at 4:40 and will wrestle again in the consolation round late morning/early afternoon on Friday. Tschetter will face the winner of the match between Kingsbury County freshman Cody Zell (37-17) and Webster Area senior Tacey Miller (35-15) scheduled for Friday morning. If Tschetter wins that match he is guaranteed a medal and can still place as high as third.

THURSDAY OPENING ROUND

106: Freeman freshman Logun Pankratz (44-13) lost a 5-3 decision to Redfield sophomore Maddon Odland (36-12) in the opening round. Pankratz trailed 3-0 after the second period, came back to tie the match at 3-3 but fell on a reversal in the final period. He will wrestle Webster Area freshman Tayden Kurkowski (28-16) in the first round consolation bracket Friday morning.

113: Freeman freshman Brody Gossen (45-2) needed just 43 seconds to pin Winner Area seventh grader Roukyn Robbins (31-16) in his opening match of the state tournament. Gossen will face Bennett County eighth grader Maddux Risse (38-13) in the quarterfinal round Thursday afternoon.

120: Freeman eighth grader Easton Tschetter (47-4) had little trouble with Faulkton Area eighth grader Cash Edgar (26-13), pinning him in 1:20 to advance to the quarterfinals. Tschetter will face Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes senior Kasen Konstanz (40-2) later Thursday afternoon.

132: Marion junior Keaton Preheim (38-19) lost to Lemmon/McIntosh junior Gage Anderson (43-9) by fall at 4:26 in his opening match. Preheim led 2-0 early, the contest was tied at 2-2 after the second period and Preheim trailed 4-2 before he was pinned. He will next face Philip/Kadoka Area/Wall freshman Oakley Menzel (12-23) in the first round consolation bracket Friday morning.

G114: Marion senior Sarah Cremer (11-10) lost her first match to Rapid City Central seventh grader Langston Huffman (39-7) by fall at 1:18 and will compete again in the first-round consolation bracket Friday morning against Brookings sophomore Bailey Tekrony (16-8).
