PHOTO OF THE DAY: OFF TO THE RACES

Freeman freshman Makenzie Scharberg eyes the finish line in the 100 as the Flyer Invitational’s running events get underway at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 19. Scharberg finished seventh in the race — Freeman senior Zenovia Butler was sixth — and was one of a host of place winners from Freeman, Marion and Menno competing in what was a cool, breezy and mostly cloudy track meet.

The Freeman Public, Freeman Academy/Marion and Menno boys all finished in the top half of the 16-team field; the Flyers finished third with 83 points, the Bearcats were fourth with 76 and Menno was sixth with 68.

The strongest team finish locally for the girls was Freeman Public, which placed sixth in the 15-team field with 63 points. Menno tied with Canistota for eighth with 44 while FA/Marion was 11th with 22.

Champions included:

  • Menno senior Ashton Massey in the 100 hurdles
  • Marion junior Keaton Preheim in the 100 and 200
  • Freeman sophomore Tate Sorensen in the 400
  • Menno sophomore Izayah Ulmer in the 1600
  • Freeman senior Rocky Ammann in the pole vault
  • The Freeman boys 4×100 and 4×200 relay team of Chris Aasen, Sorensen, Ammann and Luke Peters
  • The Menno boys sprint medley team of Isaac Fergen, Erick Buechler, Ulmer and Bryce Sattler.
