PHOTO OF THE DAY: RELAYING THE INFORMATION

The Freeman High School boys 4×200 relay turned in the best result among local athletics competing on the first day of the 99th Howard Wood Dakota Relays in Sioux Falls Friday afternoon, running to a second-place finish in the Class B division. The team of Luke Peters, Tate Sorensen, Chris Aasen and Rocky Ammann clocked a 1:32.45 and finished just behind Ipswich, which ran a 1:32.23.

Other place-winners from the first day of the Dakota Relays included:

  • 6th: The Menno 4×800 relay team of Ellyana Ulmer, Nora Robb, Zoe Schaeffer and Ashton Massey, who finished in 10:16.86 — a time that broke the foursome’s previous school record of 10:19.43 set last year.
  • 6th: The Freeman Academy/Marion boys 4×800 relay of Finley McConniel, Justin Escobar, Jackson Donlan and Tavin Schroeder, who clocked an 8:39.25;
  • 6th: The Freeman High School girls 4×200 relay team of Peyton McCune, Zenovia Butler, Vaida Ammann and Makenzie Scharberg, who ran a 1:52.39;
  • 8th: The Menno boys 4×800 relay team of Isayah Ulmer, Erick Buechler, Isaac Fergen and Bryce Sattler, who clocked an 8:44.37.
  • Also competing on Friday was Massey in the 100 hurdles — an all-class event. The Menno senior advanced through the prelims with a fourth-place finish (15.39), but was ninth in the semifinal round (15.40) and missed the finals by 0.02 seconds;
  • Freeman freshman Rylee Peters also competed in the 100 hurdles and finished 29th in the 60 runner preliminary field. Peters clocked a 16:34.

Action continues on Saturday with local competitors taking place in a number of events:

  • Massey and Peters in the all-class 300 hurdles;
  • Sorensen in the 400;
  • The FA/Marion girls sprint medley relay team of Elizabeth Piehl, Maliyah Nankievel, Emma McConniel and Estelle Waltner;
  • The FA/Marion boys sprint medley relay team of Liam Ortman, Karter Weber, Keaton Preheim and Finley McConniel;
  • The Freeman Public boys sprint medley relay team of Peters, Sorensen, Luke Miller and Chris Aasen;
  • The Freeman girls 4×100 relay team of Scharberg, Ammann, Peters and Butler;
  • The FA/Marion boys 4×100 relay team of Ortman, Weber, Dominic Sperling and Preheim;
  • The Freeman boys 4×100 relay team of Aasen, Sorensen, Ammann and Peters;
  • The FA/Marion girls 4×400 relay team of Piehl, Nankievel, McConniel and Waltner;
  • The FA/Marion boys 4×400 relay team of Ortman, Donlan, Sperling and McConniel;
  • The Menno boys 4×400 relay team of Ulmer, Fergen, Adam Munkvold and Sattler;
  • The Freeman boys 4×400 relay team of Peters, Braydan Mangel, Sorensen and Ammann.
