PHOTO OF THE DAY: GOODBYE, MR. VOSS

Students at Freeman Elementary spent part of their last morning of the 2023-24 school year showering their beloved principal, Shane Voss, with hugs, fist-bumps, cheers, cards, signs and heartfelt “goodbyes” as a way to send off the retiring administrator. “It just kind of took your breath away,” Voss said of the surprise sendoff. “I had to fight back tears. I was just hoping I could sneak out the backdoor; I’m not one who likes a lot of uproar. It was pretty humbling.”

Voss came to Freeman Public as K-6 principal 12 years ago and says his time at the district was the best of his 32-year career in education. The relationships he developed with the students will always be special, he says.

“I tried to get to know every kid on a personal level and I always tried to make them feel important and welcomed here,” he said. “That’s why I greeted them by name and told them goodbye by name every day. Not every kid let me in, but a good majority of them did.”

While Voss was able to keep his emotions in check durning the sendoff, he was also realistic.

“It’s going to be tough when I drive away,” he said.
