FREEMAN TO CELEBRATE THE 4TH ON SUNDAY

Baseball games start at noon; chislic and fireworks again on tap

A full afternoon and evening of activities is on deck as the Freeman community prepares to celebrate the Fourth of July a few days early. The ballpark grounds on Freeman’s north side will once again play host to the festivities this Sunday, June 30 with youth baseball games beginning at 12 p.m. and continuing throughout the afternoon; the community will welcome teams from Scotland/Menno for those games.

The Legion team — the Post 152 79ers made up of players from Freeman, Menno and Scotland — will also take the field, and amateur baseball will cap the action with Freeman facing Tabor.

Officials with the Freeman Athletic Association, which organizes the celebration, are asking that people refrain from parking their vehicles inside the gated ballpark area until Saturday morning because of the wet grounds. Violators will be towed.

“We are trying to get it cleaned up and mowed nice for the weekend,” wrote the Freeman Blacksox on their Facebook page.

Sunday’s schedule is as follows.

Softball field:

  • 2 p.m. – 6u boys vs. Trappers
  • 1:30 p.m. – 8u boys vs. Trappers
  • 3 p.m – 10u boys vs. Trappers
  • 5 p.m. – 12u boys vs. Trappers

Baseball field

  • 12 p.m. – 14u vs. Trappers
  • 2 p.m. – 16u vs. Trappers
  • 4 p.m. – Post 152 vs. Madison
  • 7:30 p.m. – Blacksox vs. Bluebirds

Food and fireworks will also be on tap in Freeman this Sunday. Merchants State Bank will once again be sponsoring the chislic stand, which will open at noon and be operated by members of the local town team, and other concessions will be available as well.

Finally, fireworks will come courtesy of CorTrust Bank beginning after the Blacksox game or at dark, whichever comes first.

The fireworks typically begin shortly after 10 p.m.v
