LEGION BASEBALL: 79ERS ELIMINATED WEDNESDAY

One day after losing a tough battle in the final inning, the Post 152 79ers saw their inaugural American Legion season come to a close with another one-run loss. Tabor got the best of the 79ers 4-3 in an elimination game Wednesday evening.

Post 183 used a 3-run second to take an early lead and then added another in the third to make in a 4-0 game. Post 152 got three back in the fourth but the bats were silent after that, and the season came to a close. Kory Keppen, Parker Hochstein scratched out hits and each recorded an RBI while Trent Guthmiller took the loss.

From Earlier

Post 152 let a 2-1 lead in the last inning slip away and ended up on the losing side of a 3-2 score against Wagner in the opening round of the American Legion Region 4B Tournament in Corsica Tuesday evening, July 23.

The 79ers — a first-year team made up of players from Freeman, Menno and Scotland — will face Tabor in an elimination game Wednesday at 4 p.m. The winner of that game will play again Wednesday at approximately 6 p.m. for a spot in the semifinal Thursday at 3 p.m.

The Region 4B Tournament concludes with the championship round on Friday.

Against Wagner on Tuesday, the 79ers led 1-0 after the first inning and 2-1 after the second, but Wagner — playing as Post 11 — used an error and a double to plate a pair or runs that resulted in the victory.

Rocky Ammann and Bryce Sattler each had two hits for the 79ers while Evan Scharberg, Sattler and Kory Keppen teamed up for the pitching duties. Scharberg threw 2 1/3 innings and allowed two hits and one run.

Sattler pitched 3 2/3 innings and surrendered two runs on four hits, and Keppen pitched an inning of hitless ball.
