Gladys Mehlhaf, 82

Gladys Mehlhaf, 82, of Freeman, S.D., passed away Sunday Jan. 19, 2025, at the Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home in Viborg, S.D. Visitation will be Thursday, Jan. 23 from 5 to 7 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service at the Opsahl-Kostel Memorial Chapel in Menno. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24 at the Opsahl-Kostel Memorial Chapel with Rev. Travis Grassmid officiating. A private family committal service will take place at the Menno Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are pending under the direction of the Opsahl-Kostel Memorial Chapel in Menno. Gladys was born in Parkston, S.D. on May 10, 1942 to Savin and Clara (Fuerst) Miedema. Gladys graduated from Parkston High School in 1961. She worked as a bookkeeper at the Hutchinson County Courthouse in Olivet.

Gladys was united in marriage to Eilert R. Spomer in Milltown, S.D. on April 16, 1967. With this union they shared son Mark and daughter Renae until Eilerts death on Aug. 17, 1977. Gladys worked for 25 years in the laundry department at the Freeman Community Hospital.

Gladys married Wilmer Mehlhaf on Aug. 12, 1984. Together they enjoyed car rides, viewing the agricultural crops, attending fairs, farm shows and vacation to Yellowstone National Park.

Gladys is survived by her son Mark Miedema of Freeman; daughter Renae (Jeff) Malone of Sioux Falls, S.D.; granddaughter Michaela (David) Borchardt of Brandon, S.D.; great granddaughter Clara of Brandon; sisters in law Vernetta Schulz of Parkston; and Twyla Mehlhaf of Menno.

She was preceded in death by husbands Eilert R. Spomer and Wilmer Mehlhaf, parents Savin and Clara (Fuerst) Miedema, sister Joan Pulis, and son in law Michael Hagemann.
