HOFER POURS IN 35 FOR FLYERS; TRAPPER GIRLS WIN 4TH STRAIGHT

A career game from sophomore Cadence Hofer helped lead the Freeman High School girls back from a double-digit deficit in the third quarter, and clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch from Rylee Peters — also a sophomore — and senior Peyton McCune gave the Flyers a thrilling 67-63 win over Philip in the DWC/Culver’s Classic at the Corn Palace Friday afternoon.

Hofer scored 35 points on 13-for-19 shooting that included a 6-for-8 showing from three-point range, and Peters was 9-for-10 from the charity stripe — 5-for-6 in the fourth quarter — on her way to a 17-point outing. And a pair of free-throws from McCune with 13 seconds left kept it a two-score game and sealed the deal.

Freeman trailed 37-27 at the half and was down by as many as 15 in the third quarter before storming back; the Flyers outscored the Scotties 24-14 in the fourth period to steal the win.

Freeman improved to 14-3 while Philip dropped to 9-8.

Trinity Bietz scored 15 points as Scotland/Menno broke away from a 36-36 tie going into the fourth quarter to come away with a 47-41 win over Gregory Friday night in Scotland. It was the fourth single-digit win in a row for the Trappers, who improved to 7-10. Gregory dropped to 4-12.

Also Friday, the Scotland/Menno boys battled a good Gregory team and lost 68-51 to fall to 3-13 on the season. The Gorillas improved to 15-2.

Ashton Dennis had 13 points and Izayah Ulmer went for 10 to lead the Trappers.

FHS boys crush Corsica-Stickney

The Freeman High School boys posted another impressive win on the basketball court Thursday night, taking down Corsica-Stickney 63-36. At one point in the third period the Flyers led by as many as 40 points. Freeman — which defeated Hanson by 22 points two nights earlier — improved to 13-3 while the Jaguars dropped to 9-6.

Also Thursday night, Freeman Academy/Marion was swept in a doubleheader at Andes Central/Dakota Christian. The girls lost 46-28 and fell to 3-14 while the boys lost 67-33 and dropped to 4-11.
