REGION 4B, 5A BOYS BASKETBALL UPDATE

The Freeman Academy/Marion boys basketball team saw its season come to a close in the first round of the Region 4B Tournament Monday night, March 3, falling 68-47 to Irene-Wakonda in Irene. The Bearcats, who went into the tournament as the No. 9 seed, finishes the season 6-15. The Eagles, the region’s No. 8 seed, takes a 9-12 record into the second round against top-seed and Class B No. 1-ranked Viborg-Hurley, which takes a 18-2 into the postseason.

Region 4B action was scheduled to continue Tuesday night, but winter weather prompted postponements across the area. The new schedule is as follows:

No. 3 Freeman Public (16-4) will now host No. 6 Gayville-Volin  (12-7) Friday night, March 7 at 7 p.m., with the winner playing against the winner of the Parkston/Alcester-Hudson game Saturday at 2 p.m., for a spot in the SoDak 16.

No. 5 Scotland/Menno (4-16), meanwhile, is competing in Region 5A and will travel to No. 4 Mount Vernon/Plankinton (5-15) Friday at 7 p.m., with the winner traveling to Hanson to face the Beavers Saturday at 3 p.m.
