FLYERS RETURNING TO STATE ‘B’ TOURNAMENT

Fifty years after they won the whole thing and a quarter century since the last time they qualified, the Freeman boys are going back to the State ‘B’ Basketball Tournament.

The Flyers punched their ticket Tuesday night, March 11 with a 72-60 win over defending Class B champion Howard in the SoDak 16 in the Corn Palace. Freeman built a 7-0 lead early, trailed 45-40 in the third period before finishing the game on a 32-20 run fueled by two three-pointers from freshman Luke Miller that gave the Flyers back the lead and — importantly — momentum they would not relinquish.

Freeman goes to Aberdeen next week as the No. 6 seed and will face No. 3 Viborg-Hurley in the 7:45 p.m. nightcap in the Barnett Center Thursday, March 20. The state tournament continues Friday and Saturday, March 21 and 22.

This is the eighth time the Freeman High School boys have played in a state basketball tournament.
