Sherryl Friesen, 76

Sherryl Ann (Fast) Friesen, 76, of Freeman, S.D., passed away suddenly on March 26, 2025 in Freeman. A celebration of life service will be held at Hutterthal Mennonite Church, Freeman, on April 12 at 11 a.m. with Reverend Randall Koehler officiating. Her burial service will be prior to the service across the road to the east of the church at the HMC Cemetery. Walter Funeral Home is handling the funeral arrangements.

Sherryl was born in Mountain Lake, Minn,, to John T. and Margaret (Peters) Fast on Dec. 25, 1948. She attended Mountain Lake Christian Grade School and graduated from Mountain Lake High School in 1967. She went on to earn an Associate of Arts degree from Freeman Junior College where she met her future husband, Donovan Friesen.

Sherryl and Donovan were married at Bethel Mennonite Church in Mountain Lake on Aug. 26,1971. They were blessed with two children, Denise Ann and Eric Scott. After settling down in Freeman, Sherryl and Donovan attended Hutterthal Mennonite Church for their whole married life.

Sherryl worked as a clerk at Ben Franklin, a seamstress at Alvina’s Draperies, and a clerk at Jamboree Foods. At church, Sherryl served as a Sunday school teacher, choir member, and congregational ministries volunteer. In the Freeman community later in her life, Sherryl also volunteered weekly at the Et Cetera Shoppe of Freeman on Tuesdays and delivered Meals on Wheels on Wednesdays.

Some of her many hobbies included reading, knitting, cross-stitching, attending Corvette rallies, frequenting the annual Nebraska Junk Jaunt, vacationing with family in numerous places, traveling for family reunions, planting flowers, and baking, which was Donovan, Denise, and Eric’s favorite hobby because of its tasty results.

Sherryl is preceded in death by her father, John T. Fast; mother, Margaret (Fast) Preheim; father-in-law, Jacob E. Friesen; mother-in-law, Elsie (Regier) Friesen; brother-in-law, Robert Anton; and stepfather, Reiny Preheim.

Sherryl is survived by her husband, Donovan of Freeman; daughter, Denise Ann of Norfolk, Neb.; son, Eric Scott of Norfolk; brother, John W. (Barbara) Fast of Harrisonburg, Va.; sister, Elaine Anton of Vadnais Heights, Minn.; brother, Ken (Wendy) Fast of Mountain Lake; sister, Lois (Wayne) Sousley of Elkhart, Ind.; sister, Karen (Dale) Shenk of Goshen, Ind.; sister, Janiece (Mark) Scozzari of Eagle, Idaho; sister-in-law, Diane (Mike) Harrison of Henderson; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
