PHOTO OF THE DAY: POSTGAME PAUSE

Dustin Tschetter visits with the Post 152 Junior Legion squad following its 4-1 win over Post 194 out of Parkston at Merchants State Bank Field in Freeman Tuesday evening, June 17. The Senior Legion team also won over Parkston 2-1 later that evening. Here’s the latest from the 79ers.

A one-out single by Rocky Ammann scored Parker Hochstein from third as the Post 152 seniors outlasted Parkston 2-1 in American Legion baseball action in Freeman Tuesday night, June 17. It was the second win in a row for the 19-and-under 79ers squad, which also took down Linton/Ashley/Wishek, N.D., 10-3 at the Ashley Charron Memorial Wood Bat Tournament in Webster Sunday, June 15.

Also Tuesday night in Freeman, the Post 152 juniors (16-and-under) defeated Parkston 4-1 to improve to 5-1 on the season.

Post 152 is based out of Menno and includes players from Menno, Scotland, Freeman, Canistota and Marion.

Here’s a closer look at recent action.

Senior 79ers

The Post 152 win over Parkston on Tuesday was a pitchers’ duel, with the 79ers tallying four hits and the Trojans just two. Trent Guthmiller went six innings for Post 152, giving up just one hit and one unearned run while striking out nine and walking five. Riley Tschetter pitched the seventh inning in relief, giving up a hit while striking out three and walking one to earn the win.

Amman’s walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh followed back-to-back walks for Hochstein and Luke Peters, and a hit-by-pitch for Easton Miller, all on the arm of Parkston pitcher Tate Klumb, who took the loss.

Ammann and Bryce Satter each had two singles for the 79ers — the team’s only hits.

The Senior Legion squad also traveled to Webster over the weekend for a rain-shortened tournament; Post 152 was scheduled to play twice on Saturday and again the following day but ended up playing only once on Sunday because of wet weather. But they made it count.

The 79ers fell behind 1-0 early but rallied with four runs in the third, four in the fourth and two more in the fifth to build a 10-1 lead. The Linton/Ashley/Wishek Rattlers got two back in the sixth but the game was called because of redeveloping storms.

Bryce Sattler earned the win for Post 152, striking out eight against two walks and two hits in five innings pitched. Tayden Kerrigan pitched one inning in relief.

Sattler also collected two hits and two RBI — as did Riley Tschetter — with Tschetter and Evan Scharberg both doubling for the 79ers. Other hits and/or RBI came from Rocky Ammann, Kory Keppen, Easton Miller, Erick Buechler, Tannen Auch and Oliver Waltner.

Junior 79ers

As for the younger Post 152 team, just enough offense and a strong pitching performance from Tayden Kerrigan and Oliver Waltner — who earned the win and the save, respectively — resulted in a 4-1 win over Parkston in Freeman Tuesday night.

The 79ers’ four singles came from Izayah Ulmer, Tannen Auch, Luke Peters and Riley Gall, with the team scoring twice in both the second and third innings. The Trojans had baserunners in scoring position several times, but their only run came in the sixth inning.

Kerrigan allowed just one hit over four innings pitched, striking out five and walking two.

Waltner allowed one hit and one earned run in three innings pitched, striking out five and walking two.

Both 79ers teams are in Freeman Thursday, June 19 against Lennox, with the Junior Legion starting at 6 p.m. followed by the Senior Legion.
