AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL UPDATE: PLAYOFFS START NEXT WEEK

Two regular season games remain for Post 152 (Scotland/Menno/Freeman/Canistota) — Friday, July 17 at Salem and Saturday, July 18 against Winner/Colome at Menno.

Friday’s games will begin with the Junior Legion (17-2) playing at 5:30 p.m. (five innings) followed by the Senior Legion (11-10). Saturday’s games will start with the Junior Legion at 3 p.m. followed by the Senior Legion.

Action then shifts to the postseason next week, July 22-24, when the SMFC Senior Legion will take part in the four-team, double-elimination Region 4B Tournament in Platte.

The Junior Legion will begin postseason play the following week.

Senior Legion regions

The 79ers will face Wagner at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 22 with Platte-Geddes facing Tabor on the other side of the bracket.

The winners of Tuesday’s games will play each other at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 23 for a spot in the championship round Thursday, July 24.

The losers of Tuesday’s game will face off in an elimination game July 23 at 5 p.m.

Here’s a closer look:

Tuesday, July 22

Game 1: Platte-Geddes vs. Tabor, 4 p.m.

Game 2: Wagner vs. SMFC, 6 p.m.

Wednesday, July 23

Game 3: Winner Game 1 vs. Winner Game 2, 2 p.m.

Game 4: Loser Game 1 vs. Loser Game 2, 5 p.m. (loser is eliminated)

Game 5: Loser Game 3 vs. Winner Game 4, 7 p.m. (loser is eliminated)

Thursday, July 24

Game 6: Winner Game 3 vs. Winner Game 5, 2 p.m.

Note: If the winner of Game 6 is without a loss, that team advances to the state tournament. If the winner of Game 6 had a loss earlier, a Game 7 will be necessary to determine the Region 4B champion.

The Class B Senior Legion State Tournament will be held at Milbank Aug. 1-5.

Amateur baseball

The playoffs also start next week for the Freeman Blacksox and the Menno Mad Frogs, who play as part of South Dakota Amateur Baseball’s South Central League. The league tournament — District 6 — will be played July 24 to Aug. 2 in Crofton, Neb.
