FIREHOUSE RIB COOK-OFF RETURNS SATURDAY
An event that has been accurately described as a “neighborhood block party” returns this Saturday when the Freeman Volunteer Fire Department hosts its 12th annual Firehouse Rib Cook-Off at the Swimming Pool Park. The afternoon and evening to-do is the biggest annual fundraiser for the local fire department, and one that has grown considerably since it debuted in 2014. Twelve area fire departments took part that first year — a number that has grown to the record 31 that were there in 2024.
Something similar is expected on Saturday, with action getting underway at noon with bingo for all ages and a lunch stand that will include pulled pork and ice cream. A kids’ water fight is on tap for 2 p.m., with the serving of ribs and brisket beginning at 5 p.m. A drive-through on the east side of the park option remains in place since it was introduced in 2020.
A raffled drawing for more than $2,000 in prizes will take place at 7:30 p.m., with live music provided by the BS Band starting at 8 p.m.
