PHOTO OF THE DAY: WARM WELCOME

This photo was taken last Tuesday, Aug. 19 and shows Freeman Elementary Principal Katie Juhnke welcoming students back for another year of school. This is the first full week of the 2025-26 term and students and staff are settling into a routine, as are the sports teams. Football and soccer are both underway while volleyball teams from Freeman and Menno open play today. Here’s more.

With soccer and football already underway, the start of the 2025 fall sports season now turns to volleyball and cross-country, with action beginning this week for both. Freeman Public — which this year includes players from Freeman Academy — and Menno were both scheduled to begin their respective seasons Tuesday, Aug. 26, with the Flyers playing in the Hanson Early Bird Invitational at Alexandria and the Wolves visiting Alcester-Hudson. Action continues Thursday with Freeman playing on the second day of Hanson’s invitational and Menno playing at Centerville. The Flyers’ home opener will be against Howard next Thursday, Sept. 4 while the Wolves will host Tripp-Delmont/Armour next Tuesday, Sept. 2. It will be parent’s night in Menno for both volleyball and cross-country teams.

Speaking of cross-country, that season is scheduled to begin with the Watchdog Invitational hosted by Beresford at the Bridges Golf Course Thursday, Aug. 28. Both Freeman and Menno will take part.

Freeman will host the Freeman Academy Invitational at the Prairie Arboretum Sept. 10, the Freeman Invitational Sept. 17 and the Cornbelt meet Sept. 24. The two latter ones will be held at Valley View Golf Course.
