UPDATE: TRAPPERS TAKE DOWN NO. 5 JAGUARS; PHOENIX ROLL
Scotland/Menno found a pretty good way to create some momentum and generate some enthusiasm within the program — take down a ranked team.
That’s what it did against Class B No. 5 Corsica-Stickney Friday night, Aug. 29 at Johnny Woehl Field in Menno, coming back from a deficit in the first half to beat the Jaguars 44-30. And the Trappers did it on a night that honored parents and military personnel, too, making it all the more special.
SM sealed the deal by winning the fourth quarter 14-0 and utilized a huge game from senior quarterback Izayah Ulmer, who finished with 258 yards passing on 15-of-24 completions and five touchdowns. Three of those scores went to Hunter Clark, who hauled in five catches for 125 yards, and the other two went to Jarret Andretta, who caught four balls for 62 yards.
Ulmer also carried the ball seven times for 31 yards and a touchdown while Keyen Fischer lead the ground game with 43 yards on nine carries.
Scotland/Menno, which this year is playing in Class 9AA after moving down from 11-man football, will next take a 1-1 record into Friday night’s game at Bon Homme.
Corsica-Stickney takes a 1-1 mark in its next game against Tripp-Delmont/Armour/Andes Central/Dakota Christian (0-2) in Tripp.
PHOENIX SCORE 57 UNANSWERED
Meanwhile on Friday night, Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy gave up a touchdown on the opening drive of the game but pitched a shutout thereafter, while the offense put up 57 unanswered points en route to a 57-7 win over Bon Homme in Tyndall.
The game ended with 1:34 left on the third quarter clock after second-string quarterback Easton Tschetter picked up a fumble behind center and scampered for a 44-yard score, and Tayden Kerrigan kicked the extra point.
Starting quarterback Riley Tschetter threw for 246 yards passing on just 7-of-8 completions and four touchdown strikes. Tate Sorensen caught two passes for 74 yards and two touchdowns and Jackson Donlan and David Walter both caught a touchdown pass — Walter’s for 69 yards on the first play of the second half.
Luke Peters, Easton Tschetter and Karter Weber all ran for a touchdown and the Phoenix defense held Bon Homme to 108 total yards.
The Phoneix, ranked No. 4 in Class 9AA, moved to 2-0 while the Cavaliers dropped to 1-1.
FMFA will be tested in its home opener Friday night as Class 9AA No. 1 Elkton-Lake Benton comes to town. The Elks humbled No. 3 Viborg-Hurley 43-0 Friday night.
