FREEMAN BOYS 2ND AT FLYER INVITE BEHIND MITCHELL CHRISTIAN

A sixth, seventh and eighth place finish from sophomores Lane McCune and Luke Miller and eighth grader Collin Randall put Freeman in second place in the boys varsity division of the Flyer Cross-Country Invitational held at Valley View Golf Course Wednesday, Sept. 17.

Silas Holdeman and Mitchell Christian — a leading candidate to with this year’s Class B title — took first as a team.

The Flyers also saw a nice race from freshman Josh Oleson, who finished 11th in the 43-runner field.

Times recorded in the 5,000-meter race were as follows:

  • McCune 18:09.95
  • Miller 18:22.90
  • Randall 18:23.09
  • Oleson 18:34.88

Holdeman, a junior, won the race in 15:57.97 while Mitchell Christian’s Luke Mentele, also a junior, finished in 16:36.17.

The Golden Eagles scored 12 team points to Freeman’s 21.

In the varsity girls division, Menno’s Zoe Schaeffer led local runners with a seventh place finish in the 32-runner field. The junior finished the 5,000-meter course in 21:43.42.

Freeman freshman Olivia Schultz placed 13th in 22:28.90 while sophomore Alexa Nanninga was 16th in 22:36.14

JV, JH races

Here are the local results from the junior varsity (4,000 meters) and junior high (3,000 meters) races.

Junior varsity boys (35 runners): Armando Miller, Freeman Academy senior, 5th (11:21.29); Jef Poma-Sanchez, Menno senior, 35th (15:46.58)

Junior varsity girls (30 runners): Hannah Rigo, Freeman eighth grader, 8th (13:44.70); Emma Rempfer, Menno freshman, 9th (13:45.93); Leah Crick, Menno freshman, 11th (14:00.37); Ivana Schaeffer, Menno eighth grader, 13th (14:04.33)

Junior high boys (32 runners): Korbin Jensen, Freeman eighth grader, 4th (11:27.26); Nolan Andersen, Freeman sixth grader, 7th (11:43.71); Greyson Dangel, Freeman seventh grader, 8th (11:53.12); Jaeger Elcock, Menno seventh grader, 9th (11:55.30); Egan Mettler, Menno eighth grader, 21st (13:18.42)

Junior high girls (32 runners): Ava Schultz, Freeman sixth grader, 5th (12:32.68); Valerie Wielenga, Menno sixth grader, 6th (12:38.93); Finley McCune, Freeman sixth grader, 7th (12:39.88); Emma Pankratz, Freeman sixth grader, 9th (12:52.71); Zoey Rigo, Freeman sixth grader, 19th (14:38.13); Raelynn Taylor, Freeman seventh grader, 22nd (14:55.38); Lily Lachman, Freeman sixth grader, 28th (16:29.17)
